What are antenatal classes?

Antenatal classes allow you to prepare for your baby. Antenatal classes are grouped into sessions and broken down in various units. To provide you with information for your pregnancy, labour, birth and preparing for your newborn baby. Ante natal classes are a good opportunity to discuss any issues you have and the opportunity to make new friends. Your partner is encouraged to come along and participate in the antenatel sessions with you.

What to expect at an antenatal class?

You will receive information by a health official or a midwife about the whole process of last stages of pregnancy, labour and birth.

Different types of antenatal groups and classes

You can either sign up to a NHS or private antenatal class.

NHS classes are;

• Free to join
• Run by the hospital or in a health establishment
• Organised by various health professional
• Refresher sessions may be available
• Sessions will include a tour around the hospital
• Class sizes can be large

Private antenatel groups provide a range of different groups to meet the needs of expectant mums.  Ranging from women only groups, couples only, active birth sessions to refresher classes. Most offer a more personal service which can include coming to your home or combining an hotel weekend break with ante natal services provided.

• Can be expensive
• A wide selection of groups to choose from. Including, active birth groups, women only classes and Nct classes
• Some offer refreshers courses, women only groups
• Groups are smaller making it easier for friendships to form
